Star Trek and Star Wars Fans to Unite over Common Enemy... Twilight!?! →
I found this really funny. This article has a video in which the original Sulu from the Star Trek series calls for peace between the Star Universe fans and to have them unite against Twilight. He also calls for Buffy and Blade to “get the sparkly vampires”.
Harry Potter Communities and Community Building
Two interests that have endured through the life of the children of the nineties are Harry Potter and social media. The Harry Potter books are very popular with a great number of people; the last book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows sold 8.3 million copies its first day of release. Social media is popular with many teenagers. Social media has done a great deal for fans of the Harry Potter series; it has not just expanded the ways that people learn about Harry Potter, it connects fans from all over the world. Pottermore.com and MuggleNet.com are two online communities dedicated to Harry Potter. They are both very different, but they both have aspects of the site dedicated to community building.
The Harry Potter community is very interesting in a variety of ways. Pottermore.com and MuggleNet.com are both part of the Harry Potter community. These sites are structured very differently, so here is an analysis of what each the sites have to offer. Pottermore.com is more of an interactive journey through the books. J.K. Rowling created this site and although it is not open to the general public as of now, it gives a lot of information to the users who are lucky enough to have access. This is an interactive journey, and you are sorted into a house and given a wand. The sorting is based on a short quiz, and the wand choosing process is the same; this ensures that you are in the right place based on your personality. You can compete for house points by brewing potions or by dueling other users. As you make your way through the book, new information will appear. This information is about a variety of topics, such as characters, places, or items in the books. Although MuggleNet.com is also fascinating, it is quite different from Pottermore.com. MuggleNet.com gives users the chance to get updated news, interact with other users on the forums, and learn about the books and films. All of these aspects of MuggleNet.com encourage the building of communities. Both Pottermore.com and MuggleNet.com are very interesting and fun Harry Potter communities.
Many Harry Potter communities are centered around the fans. Although the Harry Potter books and movies have all been released, people are still talking about the series and their favorite characters. The forums from MuggleNet.com say, “The series may have ended, but that doesn’t mean we cannot speculate on the futures of our favourite HP characters”. The Harry Potter communities will not die easily. This also happens on Pottermore.com, but just a bit differently. J.K. Rowling gives the background stories of many different characters that had not been explored in the books. One example of this is Minerva McGonagall’s backstory. Although McGonagall was a popular character in the books, the readers never knew much about her background. Pottermore.com gives users the opportunity to learn valuable insight about the different character’s minds. Both MuggleNet.com and Pottermore.com give users the chance to discuss and learn more about the characters in the Harry Potter books. Although somewhat different, this aspect of both these sites is a part of the community building process.
Social media really helped the book and movie release events; when a new book or movie was about to come out, many fans would flock to their favorite Harry Potter online communities. They would plan events around the releases and conjecture what they thought would happen in the book or how closely the book would be related to the movie. Pottermore.com was not around when the books and movies were released, but MuggleNet.com was. There are a great number of threads focused on predictions for the upcoming books. Most of these threads were focusing on the love and death aspects of the book. The conjectures in these threads are very interesting, especially now with all of the books published. Most of the conjectures were wrong, but a few were correct. Pottermore.com and MuggleNet.com are both very user-centric and both sites facilitate community building and are very useful sites to learn news and new happenings in the Harry Potter universe.
Harry Potter and social media come together to form a wonderful and entertaining bond. Many people have grown up with both the Harry Potter books and the evolution of social media. The online communities of Harry Potter live on even though the books and movies have all been released. Pottermore.com and MuggleNet.com are two examples of Harry Potter social media networks. They are both very different, but they both have aspects of the site dedicated to community building.
Harry Potter vs. Twilight and Social Media →
Especially since my final topic is Harry Potter and Social Media, I found this article very interesting. According to people using social media, Harry Potter is more popular/higher esteemed than the Twilight series. This made me happy, and I found it interesting.
Hey I'm Geoff: Twitter Archives? →
I think this is quite an interesting point. I know that I tried to find a tweet of my friend’s from a long time ago, and it took forever to find. I think an archive would be cool, although I’m not quite sure how the structure would work.
Something that I think would be really cool is if Twitter had archives for your tweets. Tweets never actually get deleted, but it’s rather inconvenient to scroll down for hours just to get the tweets from 3 months ago. I think it would be awesome if twitter could just group your tweets into days,…
Hey I'm Geoff: Ole email middle names? →
On this note, I go by my middle name. I sometimes forget to tell people in class if they need to e-mail me, so they get confused. For me, it is a good thing to have middle names on the e-mail because they then see my name and know it is me. If they didn’t have middle names, it would cause a bit of confusion.
I’m not sure this is really social media related but it has to do with our school St. Olaf email accounts. Anyway, I just find it really awesome and kind of awkward to have peoples’ full names come up under contacts. Why on earth does St. Olaf think it is necessary to include middle names in the…
Puppies, Finals, and Social Media →
As we all know, finals are coming up quick. Some of us also know that studies have shown that pets can lower stress and other health problems. Some schools, including our own St. Olaf, have started bringing puppies on the campus to relieve the stress of finals. On Wednesday, go pet a puppy in Buntrock at 11:00 A.M. It is called “Paws for Finals”. This blog post just talks about how a school was using puppies to de-stress the students. Check it out!

The french fry process was so interesting. I haven’t eaten at McDonald’s for a very long time, but this information was super interesting. Oh, and this was from Canada, right? I ate at a McDonald’s in Canada and I thought the ice cream was better there than in the States. Good job!
Airline Industry Storify!
8.5 million posts is a pretty impressive number. The community-building aspect of airliners.net is pretty interesting. What were some of your favorite complaints you read on the complaints site?

The MBTI sounds really interesting. I think I would like to take the test because of your presentation! Is there anywhere on the Internet it is available? Great presentation.

I thought the ideas in your presentation were very solid and cool. It is very interesting that colleges have programs big enough th have twitter accounts and followers in the online communities. It was very interesting!
